Since the inception of the Company, the Infrastructure Development & Engineering Division of Chatham House (Pvt) Ltd has-in association with its Principals- secured some of the major government development projects in Sri Lanka, funded by agencies such as KFW, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The company’s first large scale business undertaking dates back to 1948 when a contract was awarded by the then Department of Government Electrical Undertakings for the supply, installation and commissioning of generators and associated equipment, for the augmentation of the Colombo electricity supply to coincide with celebrations to mark Sri Lanka’s independence from Britain.
Our principals who were associated with us at the early stages were Westinghouse Electric Corporation, General Motors Corporation and Allis Chalmers Detroit Diesel Allison all of USA.

In collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Ceylon Electricity Board, Ceylon Government Railway, National Textile Corporation, National Paper Corporation, Sri Lanka Navy, Air Lanka and the the Department of Civil Aviation Chatham House has been involved in various infrastructure development projects with the main aim of identifying new areas of businesses that accounted for a positive contribution to the country’s economic development as well. The Principals we were associated with during this phase of our existence were M.A.N. Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg AG., Grun & Bilfinger, and J.M.Voith of Germany.

With the emergence of global trends to shift the focus from Diesel and Hydro Power solutions to renewable energy solutions, Chatham House too widened its coverage to provide solar solutions to the domestic market. Our reputation eased the path for us to establish working relationships with leading German Companies such as Solarwatt, Schletter and ABB – all of Germany and Simax of China. Owing to the high degree of concentration of solution providers in the local market, however, a business decision led to Chatham House exitting the renewable energy sector in 2020, although we continue to honour the warranties and terms of the service contracts we have entered into for the equipment already installed at our customer base.

The Medical Division of Chatham House came into being further to a decision to diversify the business into the Healthcare sector over three decades ago. Building on our key competencies, our core area of engagement has been the supply of surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic equipment and products in the fields of Women’s Health, Peripheral Intervention, Interventional Radiology & Urology to hospitals in both the government and private sectors of the countrv. Our key Principals in this sphere are Messrs COOK Medical, USA, Convergent Laser Technologies, USA, Abbott, USA/ Thoratec, Switzerland. Chalice Medical, UK and Electro Medical Systems(EMS) of Switzerland.

Despite a relatively shorter period of engagement, we are happy to note that our existence in this sphere of business has been dotted with many a milestone achievement. Above all, it is in keeping with the ethos of establishing a business opportunity which encompassed a wider benefit to the country as a whole, namely, facilitating access to enhanced patient care solutions in Sri Lanka. The range of advanced technological solutions and minimally invasive medical devices that we have and currently do represent in Sri Lanka in itself bears testimony to this fact.

In collaboration with our Principals, we are proud to have pioneered the supply of Culture Media and connected equipment to the various specialized laboratories and hospitals, to carry out In-Vitro Fertilisation procedures (lVF), the introduction into the Sri Lanka market and distribution of the Holmium Laser Machine for the fragmentation of bladder and kidney stones (in association with Convergent Laser Technologies-USA) and Capsule Endoscopy by introducing the PillCam Capsule Endoscopy System & Reflux & Manometry equipment (in association with GIVEN lmaging- lsrael).

As recently as in October 2014, in association with Chalice Medicals UK, we consider it an honour to have been directly associated with the supply of the 2nd Generation CentriMag Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) – Trolley System to The Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Colombo. This system was commissioned further to the authorities realising the importance of the 1st Generation ECMO Trolley System that had been previously installed at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle by Chalice Medicals, UK. Incidentally, these are the only two ECMO systems available in Sri Lanka at present.
